Can’t speak for either Willie or Shorty, but in my head canon, Indy was able to rationalize/explain away all the supernatural and magical things he experienced as being a result of the drugs he was forced to drink. For things he witnessed before that, he’d’ve convinced himself that those drugs caused him to not remember them accurately.
This was how he was able to tell Marcus with a straight face the following year that he didn’t believe in magic and a lot of superstitious hocus pocus.
