In this episode, we take a listen one of the radio broadcasts that inspired the 1938 Mercury Theatre on the Air version of “The Wars of the Worlds”. This is “The Fall of the City” from the Columbia Workshop, written by Archibald MacLeish, directed and produced by Irving Reis, and starring Orson Welles.
The fall of the city first aired on April 11, 1937 on CBS Radio.
An unexpected prophecy from an unexpected source places a city in panic. All the events are reported from that city’s radio broadcast station. Some of this probably sounds familiar to the 1938 “War of the Worlds” fans.
