Matt reviews the Alice Cooper comic Alice Cooper Volume 2 #1 from Dynamite Comics in this Halloween 2024 edition of Matt’s Crummy Halloween Comic Collection. A lifelong fan who finally caught the shock rocker live in Orlando and again in Tampa with Rob Zombie, Matt grabbed this October 2023 issue off a new release rack. Then he learned it was far from Alice’s first comic book. Decades far.
Written by Rodney Barnes, the story opens in a jazz club floating above the pits of hell. Richard Pryor warms up a crowd of legends including Elvis, Prince, James Brown and Miles Davis for Lucifer himself. Prince tells the devil that the real test is winning over living fans, so Lucifer starts eliminating the competition by having demons abduct rock front-men. That leaves Alice Cooper, warned by the Archangel Gabriel in the nightmare place, to rock and battle right back.
In this episode:
- Matt’s growing hunt list of Alice Cooper comics, including Marvel Premiere #50 (1979) and Bart Simpson’s Tree-house of Horror #10
- A full plot breakdown, from zombie fans at the record store signing to Alice smashing a demon with a guitar
- Artwork highlights, including the club scene and a Nita Strauss look-alike on stage
- A rundown of the many variant covers, from Cover A through Cover O
- Matt’s verdict: a pretty fun read, good enough that he picked up and actually read the next four issues
It’s a must-listen for Alice Cooper fans, Halloween fans and horror comic collectors. The next four episodes in the series also cover Dynamite titles. Find more Halloween season content at neozaz.com.
